When is the suitable time to have a surgical operation after taking Covid-19 vaccine?
Surgery Process After Covid 19 Vaccine: Since December 2019, the disease caused by the Covid-19 virus has swept our country, like the whole world. After March 2020, surgical operations other than emergency operations were stopped with the recommendation of the health ministry. Surgeries started again as of June. However, it was recommended not to undergo surgical operations for at least 14 days in those who had corona disease. Nowadays, with the start of the Covid-19 vaccine, the question of whether surgical operations will be performed, and if so, how many days after the corona vaccine will be made has come to the agenda.
What is Corona Vaccine?
Vaccination is the process of giving the body a weakened or dead state of the disease-causing organism or a protein fragment to increase the body’s immune system . After the vaccine is given, the immune system in our body goes into action and we start to produce antibodies. On average, it takes 14 days for our antibodies to form. After the Covid-19 vaccine is administered. We look at it with the antibody test done after 14 days. However, there are some considerations in order for antibodies to be formed at a sufficient rate in this period after vaccination. There are some considerations about surgical operations to be performed under general anesthesia and some medications that should be used during this time.
Some drugs used in general anesthesia or surgery itself may disrupt the response of the immune system. At the same time, pain relievers, which we call nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are used after surgical operation, may slightly reduce the immune response. Considering that antibody response will occur in the first 14 days after vaccination, it may be better to postpone planned (elective-non-emergency) surgical operations during this period.
All information shared with the doctor or the medical team will not be shared without the consent of approval of the patient
We make sure that the patient is knowing all the details of the operation in order to explain what to expect after the operation
We always strive to provide the necessary efforts to provide the highest quality of professional services to all patients without exception
As a result;
– In the post-vaccination period, all kinds of emergency surgery can be performed, there is no restriction for this.
– Considering that the immune response may be affected in scheduled (non-elective-non-emergency) surgeries after vaccination, it would be reasonable to postpone the operation for approximately 14 days.
– If painkillers called NSAIDs will not be used after surgery, the patient can be vaccinated after stabilization. However, it would be more appropriate to postpone surgical operations in order to make a differential diagnosis in complications.
