What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the growth of the breasts with hormone imbalance in men. Excess secretion of the female hormone estrogen in the body and the decrease of the male hormone testosterone cause abnormal growth in the breast tissue. Although it is seen in adolescence in most men, gynecomastia can also be seen in infants and older men. Although the reasons are different, men of all ages can experience gynecomastia.

Is Gynecomastia a disease?

Gynecomastia is not a disease. It can be prevented when it is determined why the estrogen hormone, which causes breast growth in men, increases. For example, some drugs used in prostate treatment, antibiotics, sedatives, steroids, hormones, fruits, and vegetables can cause gynecomastia. The use of these drugs should be reviewed with doctors or the consumption of hormonal foods should be stopped. While it is possible to prevent it, the change in appearance causes many men to be uncomfortable. Gynecomastia surgery also eliminates this discomfort.

HOW IS GYNECOMASTY SURGERY PERFORMED?

Before gynecomastia surgery is performed, it should be determined that you really have this problem. If the person feels swelling, persistent pain, and excessive sensitivity in their breasts, these symptoms should be considered. In addition, in some cases, fluid coming from the nipple is among the symptoms of gynecomastia. If your doctor thinks you have gynecomastia after examining you, he will order breast ultrasound and hormone analysis.

The most effective and definitive solution for gynecomastia is surgical intervention. How gynecomastia surgery will be performed is determined by the type of gynecomastia. Different types of gynecomastia are seen, including the fatty type, the glandular type and the mixed type. While liposuction is performed for fatty gynecomastia, breast tissue is surgically removed for glandular gynecomastia. In mixed type gynecomastia, both surgical intervention and liposuction are performed.

Surgical intervention in the treatment of gynecomastia takes place under general anesthesia, but the surgeon may decide to have local anesthesia depending on the patient’s condition and wishes. A patient under general anesthesia is kept under observation for one day after gynecomastia surgery. In local anesthesia, it is possible for the patient to be discharged on the same day. The time of discharge from the hospital is determined by the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s decision.
