What are the differences between Primary Rhinoplasty and Secondary Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is an operation performed in order to eliminate congenital or subsequent deformities and breathing problems. The results of Rhinoplasty surgery, which is one of the most popular operations nowadays, may not always be as desired. While the first operation is called Primary Rhinoplasty, the second operation, where the desired results are not obtained after the first operation, is called Secondary Rhinoplasty, as the name suggests. At this point, we can say that many people are wondering what the difference is between primary and secondary Rhinoplasty.
What is Primary Rhinoplasty surgery?
The operations that it was done in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose are called primary Rhinoplasty. However, as in all aesthetic operations, it may not always be possible to achieve a perfect result in Rhinoplasty. Because, although the tissue of each patient is different, the response to the surgery is different for this reason. The nose is a single organ. It is not as easy as it is thought to bring the nose to have desired appearance symmetrically due to the bilateral structure placed in the midline of the face. In other words, it is unlikely that a perfect success will emerge after the first rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is an operation that allows people to be much more confident by changing their appearance. The patient should clarify the expectations before surgery. In addition, it is imperative that the patient share what he / she expects from the operation with his / her doctor. We should say that those who get the best results from primary Rhinoplasty are not those who aim for a perfect result, but those who think to improve the appearance of their nose.
The success of primary rhinoplasty depends on a number of factors. In addition to the knowledge, skills and experience of the surgeon, the age of the patient, general health condition, nose structure, skin structure, the degree of nasal appearance, tissues and some special problems of the patient are determinants. Primary rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. It is separated from the cartilage and bone tissues under the skin of the nose. It is brought into the desired form before the operation. Especially the excess tissue pieces are removed with precision cutters. Primary rhinoplasty is performed for both men and women at the age of 18 at the earliest.

What is Secondary Rhinoplasty?
Another name for Secondary Rhinoplasty is Revision Rhinoplasty. It is performed in order to correct the complications that occur after Primary Rhinoplasty. We have to express that it is a much more difficult and complex surgery compared to the first Rhinoplasty. Therefore, it must be done by an experienced surgeon. There may be more than one reason for Secondary Rhinoplasty:
- The first surgery is not performed as it should be
- Inexperience of the surgeon
- The patient did not share the expectations and requests with the doctor before the operation.
- Expectations about the operation are not realistic.
- Experiencing functional disorders during the healing process after the first Rhinoplasty.
- Opening of support stitches.
- Trauma during recovery period.
As a result, Secondary rhinoplasty is recommended in order to correct the deformations that occur after primary Rhinoplasty. With Revision Rhinoplasty, it is aimed to obtain the most compatible nose shape in terms of both appearance and functionality. Just like in Primary Rhinoplasty, in Secondary Rhinoplasty, the patient is first subjected to a detailed physical examination. After the first operation, nasal sagging, collapsing, asymmetry in the nostrils, bone and cartilage problems are detected. Then, it is checked what changes will be made according to the patient’s expectations.
Revision rhinoplasty can be performed under both general and local anesthesia. We can express that the duration of the operation varies according to the magnitude of the problems. Finally, after at least six months have passed after the first Rhinoplasty, a second operation is needed.
